NATIVE AMERICAN PLACE NAMES IN THE MOOSEHEAD LAKE REGION

Many locations in the Moosehead Lake Region of Maine were named by the Native American peoples residing in the area prior to the arrival of the white man.
Following is a list of some of these names along with their meanings, where known.

Piscataquis -

Penobscot - "Place of rocks"

Chesuncook - Allagash - probably from Allagaskwigamook, meaning "bark-cabin lake"

Attean - the name of a Native American chief

Seboomook -

Kokadjo - from Kokadjoweemgwasebemis, meaning "Kettle Mountain"

Kineo - probably "high bluff"

Kathadin -

Tomhegan - "Hatchet"
