NORTH OF MOOSEHEAD LAKE
A motorist can drive from Greenville to the
north end of the lake from either the east or the west. From
the west,
-Take Route 6/15 north into Rockwood
-Turn right onto the bridge
-turn right at the end of the bridge and continue for 20 miles to the 20 Mile
checkpoint
-follow directions to specific areas.
From the east
-take the Kokajo road to Kokajo
-continue to Sias Hill Checkpoint
-follow directions to specific areas
Seboomook - Between WW I and WW 2, Seboomook
was the site of the Seboomook House hotel. In 1943, a POW
camp was built for German prisoners, but nothing remains
today. Little from before 1950 remains at Seboomook, but
the stories and photographs of days past can be found at
the store.
Northeast Carry - Follow the signs from
the Silas Hill checkpoint. The road between Seboomook and Northeast
Carry has recently washed away, so it is difficult to reach
it from the west. Several buildings (including a railroad shed
and the Winnegarnock House) from before 1950 still stand in
Northeast Carry, and because of this it has kept its distinctive
look. A submerged pier still juts out into the lake where steamships
once docked. Now, Northeast Carry is a settlement of vacation
homes, and a gas station and garage with convenience store
and lodging cabins.
Chesuncook - Follow the signs from Sias
Hill to Chesuncook Landing. Launch your boat there and navigate
to Chesuncook. Chesuncook is one of the few settlements in
the area that have been preserved, and look the same as they
did 70 years ago. Many of the buildings remain, yet few people
live here. The church is the main attraction, hosting services
in summer. The Chesuncook Lake House is a popular lodging facility.
Pittston Farm - from 20 Mile, continue
straight for 10 miles past the next two roads. The entrance
is on your right. Pittston Farm is the last remaining north
woods logging era farm. Now it is a campground and restaurant.
Several old buildings remain, and the farm is well maintained
to reflect its character as a farm.
