As the Executive Director of the Moosehead Historical Society, I am delighted to share some exciting news with our community. We have officially relocated our administrative office to the heart of downtown Greenville, now situated in the former Moosehead Cultural Heritage Center at 6 Lakeview Street. This move marks a significant milestone in our journey to preserve and celebrate the rich history of the Moosehead region.
In December, our Board of Trustees made a pivotal decision to revert our downtown facility’s name back to the Center for Moosehead History, a name it proudly held from 2008 to 2022. This change is more than just a name; it is a reaffirmation of our mission and identity. By returning to the “Center for Moosehead History,” we are embracing our roots and renewing our commitment to making local history accessible and engaging for everyone.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, we are planning a re-dedication event early this summer. Stay tuned for more details—we can’t wait to share this special day with all of you!
Our downtown location is already buzzing with energy as our team settles in. We are thrilled with the results and are confident that this move will make our office more accessible to the public throughout the year. The second-floor auditorium will be utilized more frequently for programs and meetings, and we will be expanding our exhibits to include this space as well.
With increased office and research space, we are better equipped to accommodate our growing number of volunteers. The new environment is more collaborative and inspiring for everyone involved. Over the past few months, we have been hard at work transforming the space. The old kitchen has been converted into staff offices, freshly painted and carpeted to provide a comfortable setting for our team. New lighting has been added to both the office and exhibit areas, greatly improving visibility and enhancing the overall experience for our visitors. Additionally, we are refreshing our exhibits and adding new ones in the auditorium. It’s an ongoing process, but we are eager to share these enhancements with you.
And for those wondering about our Junction campus, rest assured—we haven’t forgotten about it! We are excited to announce that we will be repurposing our old office space there to expand the Lumbermen’s Museum, with a primary focus on enhancing the preservation of our logging heritage. The Lumbermen’s Museum has always been a highlight, and this expansion will take it to the next level. Over the coming months, we will be transforming the space, and we can’t wait to showcase it this spring.
Meanwhile, we will continue to offer our popular docent-guided tours of the Eveleth-Crafts-Sheridan Historical House from this location. These tours provide a unique glimpse into the domestic life of our region’s past, and we’re committed to maintaining this cherished experience for our visitors.
As we continue this journey, we are more committed than ever to celebrating and preserving the rich history of the Moosehead region. To make all of this possible, we are actively seeking summer volunteers who share our passion for history and community. Volunteers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in history by leading tours at the Eveleth-Crafts-Sheridan Historical House, engaging with visitors at the Center for Moosehead History, or nurturing the beauty of our gardens. It’s a rewarding way to connect with our community and contribute to preserving our local heritage.
On a personal note, watching our campuses transform and seeing the enthusiasm of our team has been incredibly fulfilling. The dedication of our staff and volunteers inspires me every day. I am honored to be part of this vibrant community and excited for what the future holds.
We aim to have everything ready for a grand re-dedication by the time our annual meeting rolls around. This is an exhilarating time for us, and we look forward to welcoming you to our new office!
